Former Iowa Congressman Dave Nagle had encouraging words for 4th District Congressional candidate Bill Maske at a fundraiser in Ames Saturday (Aug. 14).

Nagle said he wasn’t expected to win his race for Congress in 1987, but he surprised political pundits by pulling out a victory, and ending up serving three terms in Washington.

The pundits haven’t given Maske much chance of defeating Republican incumbent Tom Latham either, Nagle observed. But he said Maske has a strong message and Latham has a weak record.

“Voters have to be reminded that Laham voted against extending unemployment compensation and wants to continue the tax cut for the most wealthy in America,” Nagle said.

Nagle represented Iowa’s 3rd District from 1987 to 1993, and was chair of the Iowa Democratic Party.

Maske, who served as educational administrator of the Everly Community School District for 25 years, is seeking the U.S. House seat that represents most of Central and northern Iowa.

He told a crowd of about 60 persons attending the fundraiser that he wants to be a proactive representative for the 4th District, unlike his opponent, who has been called “an empty suit” by his critics.

The fundraiser Saturday had been scheduled in the backyard of Brent and Maggie Wynja in Ames, but the uncertain weather caused planners to move it inside, to Maggie Wynja’s American Country Home Store in downtown Ames.
