OFA Grassroots Planning Strategy Meeting & Light Salad Supper

Ames Public Library
FT Brown Auditorium
515 Douglas Avenue
Ames

Something amazing happened in Iowa, on January 3, 2008. Backed by a dedicated grassroots network of Iowans, Senator Barack Obama won the Iowa Caucus. His general election campaign was won because those same people were joined by millions of others around the nation who had a stake in that campaign and got involved.

On Thursday, June 16th we at Organizing for America invite you back in to that process. Join us for a grassroots planning session where you can share your insights, ideas, and experience as we discuss our localized strategy for success.

We will be serving a light supper of salads, brownies and lemonade.  Please RSVP so we can provide enough food.  We still can use one to two more salads.  Please contact Jan at 268-0313 or bauerjan@yahoo.com.

WE ARE ONE RALLY

West Steps of the Iowa State Capitol
Des Moines

Interested in carpooling? Call 268-0313.

As our economy is struggling to rebound we know that our country needs one thing… good jobs. But across the country, and especially with our neighbors in Wisconsin, corporate-backed lawmakers are trying to use state budget problems as an excuse to undermine the rights of our teachers, nurses, firefighters, public workers and others. Instead of finding ways to create good jobs, politicians have instead decided to pay back the corporate CEO’s who spent millions on the November elections.

Last year the Supreme Court granted corporations unprecedented rights to influence elections. Now, those same corporations want to limit the ability of PEOPLE to organize and keep their freedoms so they can make ends meet for their families. Unions are targeted because they are effectively organizing groups that corporations cannot control.

We can’t let the corporations win. We are fighting back! We know that it was Wall Street’s gambles and broken promises that have hurt us… not workers. We know that the CEO’s are trying to shift the blame for unemployment and rising poverty levels from themselves and onto workers and unions. We know that attacking working people isn’t about balancing any budget, it’s about CEO’s using politicians to make sure they continue to pull in huge paychecks and bonuses.

Those same CEO’s want to control how we spend money in our communities by cutting public sector jobs instead of closing tax loopholes. They are fighting for privatizing public jobs so THEY can profit. And these bought and paid for politicians expect us to sacrifice vital public services so they can pay back these corporations and CEOs.

What’s the reason for all this excitement right now? The tea party-backed Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, has declared all-out war on workers’ freedoms. He's slashing taxes for the richest residents of his state, and wants to eliminate the rights of workers to organize a union, bargain for fair wages or advocate for decent pay and benefits.

We need to join together with our neighbors in Wisconsin to curb unchecked corporate power and demand that politicians work to create real solutions to the problems we are facing. We need to let them know that we will fight for our communities, not for corporations.

SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1. Attend the WE ARE ONE RALLY at the Iowa State House on Tuesday at 1 pm – details are below

2. Change your Facebook Status to “Today I stand in solidarity with the teachers, firefighters, nurses, and all public workers who are fighting for their rights. If you do too, change this to your status for the rest of the day.”

3. Click on this link to sign on in support and watch the news unfold from the streets of Madison - where a team of USAction affiliated bloggers and activists are deep in the fight for workers' rights and social justice. http://www.wearewisconsin.org/

Wisconsin is on the front lines of this battle now, but tomorrow it could be Iowans. The people fighting there need our support and they need to know we’ll continue this fight together in every state until we’ve secured the rights of people, not corporations, to control our government.

WE ARE ONE RALLY

Wisconsin is not the only state where working families are under attack. Across this nation, the lives and livelihoods of working families are being attacked systematically by right wing fanatics bent on crippling or destroying the trade union movement in America.

Show your support for Wisconsin workers and all workers by standing with us at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.

Who: Concerned Iowans

What: WE ARE ONE RALLY

When: Tuesday, February 22, 2011 1:00 p.m.

Where: West Steps of the Iowa State Capitol

For more information, please contact Sue Dinsdale at sdinsdale@iowacan.org

Thank you for standing with workers, not corporations!
